Artist's Statement

My work incorporates text into dense, painterly surfaces to form a bastard hybrid that I have coined “narrative abstraction”. These paintings are meant to elicit a wide range of responses – polemical, introspective and emotional. I construct them in a provisional manner, as they are not products of predetermined strategy. It is only through the process of making that the work’s thematic content is extracted and codified. It is a process of give and take between the canvas and myself, a balance between aspiration and reality.

The paintings are a product of struggling with interiority and exteriority, the subjective and objective, the public and private of art and painting in particular. It often seems to me that the world of figurative art presents a kind of parallel reality that is often involving, but ultimately artificial. Whereas abstraction, while having a superior claim on the present world (or factualness), is unable to utilize the richness of narrative and its attendant allusions. My work attempts to incorporate the strengths of both the abstract and figurative, playing with allusion and material fact, one actively informing the other.
